Biden’s silence on Maui wildfires raises concerns.

President Biden Silent ​on Deadly Maui Wildfires

President Joe Biden has come under fire for ⁣refusing to ​comment on the devastating wildfires in Maui‌ that have claimed the lives​ of at least 96 people, with many more ‌still‌ missing.

While enjoying his time in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, the ⁢president was approached by a reporter and asked about the rising death toll in Maui. In response,⁢ Biden simply stated, “No, no comment,”⁤ according to footage of the event.

Even during a bike ride on Sunday,⁤ when questioned about the wildfires, the president gave a similar ​dismissive ​answer, ‌saying, ⁤”We’re looking at it,” as reported.

Last week, President Biden declared a major disaster in Maui, ⁢promising federal aid to the fire-ravaged island. The White House‍ stated that ‌the disaster order would make federal funding available to those​ affected‍ in Maui County.

During an event in Salt Lake City, Utah, President Biden ⁤expressed his​ commitment to ‌fighting the fires and‍ evacuating residents and⁣ tourists. He stated, “We’re working as quickly ⁤as possible… every asset that we have will be available to them.”

However, following his “no comment” remarks, the president⁢ faced criticism from commentators and former officials. Some compared his response to the toxic⁤ spill in East Palestine, Ohio​ earlier this year, where he and federal officials also faced backlash.

Monica Crowley, former U.S. ‍Treasury Department assistant⁣ secretary for public affairs, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to ‌express her disappointment, stating, “Biden doesn’t care about the suffering people of ⁣Maui, or the suffering⁢ people‌ anywhere in America.”

Republican candidate Kari ​Lake also criticized the president, highlighting his lack of concern for the devastation in Maui. She tweeted, “Putting America‌ First means getting ⁤this joker out of the White House.”

Hawaii’s governor has issued a warning that the death toll‌ from​ the Maui ⁤wildfires could rise significantly as search and rescue teams ⁤continue their efforts. The ⁣fires, which have already claimed 96 lives,⁣ are the deadliest in the United States in over a century.

As of late Sunday, two fires have not ‌yet ⁤been fully contained, according to Maui County.

Governor Josh Green‌ has warned that the search efforts may uncover many⁢ more tragic stories, estimating that 10 to 20 people ⁤may be found per day until the search‌ is complete. He also mentioned that the number of ‌missing individuals has dropped⁣ to about 1,300 as cell phone service ​is gradually being restored.

The fires ‍have left the historic ‌town ‌of Lahaina in ruins, with nearly every building destroyed. The county reports that the fire in Lahaina is 85% contained, while the Upcountry⁣ fire is 60% contained.

Green expressed the devastating impact of the fires, stating that an estimated‌ $5.6 ‍billion in value has been ⁤lost.

The cause of the‌ wildfires is currently under investigation, and​ authorities will also review their response to the​ disaster. There were instances‌ where fires‌ were thought to be extinguished but later flared up again. Additionally, the county‍ failed to activate sirens that could have warned the entire population, relying instead on social media posts.

Meanwhile, tourists are being urged to avoid traveling to Maui, ‍as many hotels ⁤are accommodating evacuees and ‌first responders. ⁣Governor Green has‌ arranged for 500 hotel rooms to ‌be made available for displaced locals and an additional 500 rooms ‌for FEMA workers. Some hotels will continue normal ‍operations to ⁣support ​the local economy.

Green expressed gratitude for the ‌support received‌ from the Biden administration, ⁤stating, “It’s going to ⁤take a great ⁣deal of time to recover from this, but we have the support from every level of government, especially given President Biden’s approval of our disaster declaration⁤ request today.”
