Scalise narrowly defeated Rep. Jim Jordan in a secret vote, with 113 votes to 99. Jordan had previously received the backing of former President Donald Trump.
McCarthy himself faced a similar challenge before becoming speaker, with the House going through 15 rounds of voting before settling on him. Scalise now needs 217 votes for the job, but with only 221 House Republicans, he has little room for error.
Divisions within the GOP
After the vote, Rep. Thomas Massie revealed that there are at least 20 GOP members who will not support Scalise. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also announced her support for Jordan, stating that Scalise should focus on his battle with cancer instead of pursuing the speakership.
I’m supporting Jim Jordan for Speaker. I’m not supporting Scalise. I like Steve Scalise, and as I said, I want him to beat cancer, and he should be focused on that.
What I do think is an unfair and quite frankly disgusting attack is members of our conference using..

Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also withdrew her support for Scalise, stating that there is no consensus candidate for speaker and that the party needs more time to figure out a solution.

Jordan has offered to give the nominating speech for Scalise, highlighting his belief that Scalise is the right person for the job.

How have divisions within the GOP emerged following the vote and what impact could this have on Steve Scalise’s chances of becoming speaker
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy recently expressed his skepticism about Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s chances of becoming the next speaker of the House. McCarthy referred to it as a “big hill” for Scalise to climb and highlighted that Scalise had promised many people that he would secure 150 votes but fell short of that goal.
Scalise narrowly defeated Rep. Jim Jordan in a secret vote, with 113 votes to 99. Jordan had previously received the backing of former President Donald Trump. Now, Scalise needs 217 votes for the job, but with only 221 House Republicans, he has little room for error.
Divisions within the GOP have also emerged following the vote. Rep. Thomas Massie revealed that at least 20 GOP members will not support Scalise, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her support for Jordan while urging Scalise to focus on his battle with cancer instead of pursuing the speakership. Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also withdrew her support, stating that there is no consensus candidate for speaker and that the party needs more time to find a solution.
When asked if he preferred Jordan for the speakership, McCarthy emphasized that the decision is up to the conference. However, he stressed that time is running out for Scalise to secure the role. Jordan, on the other hand, has offered to give the nominating speech for Scalise, expressing his belief that Scalise is the right person for the job.
In a poll conducted by The Western Journal, 82% of respondents voted against Scalise becoming speaker, while 18% voted in favor. McCarthy made it clear that he does not have a preference for Jordan or Scalise, as the decision ultimately rests with the conference. However, he emphasized the urgency of the situation if Scalise wants to secure the speakership.
It is worth noting that The Western Journal included a note from its staff, expressing their concerns about financial difficulties due to being on a “financial kill list” created by advertisers who disagree with their editorial stance.
