Big Tech and Government Collusion Has Created ‘Censorship Industrial Complex,’ Republicans Say

 

During a hearing on March 30, House Republicans alleged that collusion between Big Tech companies and the government has resulted in the creation of a “censorship industrial complex.”

The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, led by Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), convened for the second round of the hearing, which included witnesses such as Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), and former Missouri deputy attorney general for special litigation, D. John Sauer. The aim was to discuss Missouri and Louisiana v. Biden, a case in which the plaintiffs challenged a COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Although certiorari was denied by the U.S. Supreme Court, the discovery process for the case uncovered evidence of government censorship on social media platforms, which further underscored the need for the congressional investigation into the censorship industrial complex, said Jordan.

The chairman blamed collusion between Big Tech and the federal government for advancing the censorship agenda. He pointed to Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in 2021 and the subsequent release of documents, which demonstrated how the previous owners of Twitter colluded with the government to suppress potential political opinions or news stories. Jordan argued that the government should not be allowed to utilize the services of nongovernmental actors to further its censorship objectives.
