Bill Barr Reveals Impact Of Mexico’s Drug Cartels On U.S., Calls For U.S. Military Intervention

William Barr, former Attorney General, published an opinion-piece late last year that detailed the real extent of Mexico’s drug cartels responsible for the destruction inside the U.S.

Barr highlighted legislation that Congress passed that would allow President Joe Biden to authorize the use of U.S. military force to fight the drug cartels. He said that the head of the serpent was located on the south side of the border and that this is the place to be fighting.

The op-edThe Wall Street Journal featured a Thursday article by. It noted that more Americans die each year from overdoses than were American soldiers during World War II’s bloodiest year.

Barr pointed out, however that just looking at how many Americans have died from overdoses of drugs does not show the extent of the harm done by cartels.

“A 2017 analysis, accounting for the costs of healthcare, criminal justice, lost productivity and social and family services, estimated that the total cost of America’s drug epidemic was more than $1 trillion annually, or 5% of gross domestic product,” He wrote. “Given the explosion in illicit drug deaths since then, this estimate now seems conservative.”

Barr noted that aggressive action against cartels is effective and worked in the early 1990s when the U.S. and Colombian governments joined forces to eradicate the two most powerful cartels in the world at that time, the Medellín and Cali cartels. Barr stated that President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was responsible for reducing America’s aggression in eradicating cartels from their homeland.

Barr then described what Barr believes is necessary to end Mexico’s cartels.

How can we defeat the Mexican cartels, you ask? The first is a more aggressive American approach to Mexico, with a substantial U.S. intelligence and law enforcement presence as well as some military capabilities. The Mexican government is expected to support this effort and will likely participate if they realize that the U.S. has the commitment to doing whatever it takes to stop the cartels.

The second is that the threat cartels present to America requires us to confront them as national security threats and not law enforcement matters. This narcoterrorist group is more similar to ISIS than the American mafia. While case-by–case prosecutions may be possible, it is not enough to end them. We must use all the tools available to us in Mexico. The cartels cannot be declared terrorist groups by themselves. It is not enough to simply declare them terrorist groups.

According to the most recent DEA National Drug Threat Assessment, most illegal drugs are transported through the unsecured south border. This has been made less secure by Biden.

“Mexican transnational criminal organizations continue to supply most of the cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl smuggled into the country, while violent street gangs dominate the retail sale and distribution of these illicit drugs at the local level,” The report said. “Mexican TCOs are the greatest drug trafficking threat to the United States; they control most of the U.S. drug market and have established varied transportation routes, have advanced communications capabilities, and hold strong affiliations with criminal groups and gangs in the United States.”

Mexico’s drug cartels are so powerful that there are often situations in which the Mexican government is forced to back down, like in 2019 when the Mexican military captured Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of notorious Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquín Guzmán Loera, and was forced to let him go after hundreds of heavily armed cartel gunmen threatened to murder families and overrun the soldiers. Mexico launched a massive military operation in January to recapture Ovidio Guzmán that involved more than 3,500 soldiers. Although the mission was successful after intense gunfire, it resulted in many deaths.

Some people suggest that the military operation be called off. signaled A shift in Mexico’s policy under the leadership of its leftist president Andrés Manuel López ObradorHe came to office promising that he would make a difference. “hugs not bullets” Approach to dealing with cartels

Barr isn’t buying the AMLO change and calls him cartel’s. “chief enabler.” “In reality, AMLO is unwilling to take action that would seriously challenge the cartels,” Barr wrote. “He shields them by consistently invoking Mexico’s sovereignty to block the U.S. from taking effective action.”
