Barr opposes Trump’s potential re-election.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr Speaks Out Against Trump’s Return to the Oval Office
Former Attorney General Bill Barr has made it clear that he is “adamantly against” the idea of former President Donald Trump returning to the Oval Office. Speaking at an event hosted by The City Club of Cleveland to promote his new book, “One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General,” Barr stated that it would be a “tragedy” if Trump won the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. However, he did note that he did not believe that would be the case.
Other Serious Candidates
Barr went on to say that there are other serious candidates who have most of the same policies as Trump but without all the baggage. He believes that these candidates would be a better choice for the Republican Party.
- Barr served as attorney general under both the George H.W. Bush and Trump presidencies.
- He had a falling out with Trump after the 2020 presidential election.
- Barr resigned in December 2020 and has been an outspoken critic of the former president since then.
Trump’s Ability to Hold Office
When asked by Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera whether he believed Trump was fit to hold office, Barr responded that Trump would be “the last person” who could execute and achieve the policies he promotes. He went on to say that Trump does not have the discipline, ability for strategic thinking, or the ability to get things done in the system. According to Barr, it is a “horror show” when Trump is left to his own devices.
Trump’s Policies
Despite his criticism of Trump’s ability to hold office, Barr did note that he was satisfied with the performance of the Trump administration up until the 2020 election. He believed that Trump had been treated unfairly by the press and federal law enforcement in relation to the Department of Justice’s Russia probe. Barr also enjoyed the informal and “chaotic” way in which Trump conducted business, likening meetings in the Oval Office to life at a fraternity house.
