Bill Barr’s stance on Trump trials as election interference.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr Weighs in on Investigations into Trump
In a recent interview, former Attorney General Bill Barr was asked about the investigations into his one-time boss, former President Donald Trump, and whether they constituted election interference.
Barr firmly stated, “Now, you can argue about whether he should have been charged and so forth, but the idea that this is interfering with the election is simply wrong.”
Despite their past disagreements, Barr has defended Trump against charges in two of the four criminal cases he faces. During a Fox News interview with John Roberts, Barr addressed the “legal trials and tribulations” of his former boss.
Examining the Impact on the Primary Season
Roberts asked Barr about the upcoming trial on the election, set to begin on March 4, the day before Super Tuesday in Washington, D.C. He mentioned concerns from Trump supporters that this trial is politically motivated and meant to disrupt the primary process.
Roberts then played a clip of Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie discussing whether the investigations constitute election interference. Christie, a vocal critic of Trump, argued that Trump’s conduct interferes with the primary process due to his indictment in four different jurisdictions.
Barr agreed with Christie’s assessment, stating, “The basic principle in the criminal justice system is if a prominent person commits a crime and is seeking office, that doesn’t give him immunity. If there’s enough time to have it resolved before the election, it should be resolved. The idea of letting someone run in the election and addressing the charges later is not a principle of the criminal justice system.”
Dismissing the notion of blanket immunity for candidates, Barr emphasized, “Now, you can argue about whether he should have been charged and so forth, but the idea that this is interfering with the election is simply wrong.”
