Bill Clinton Released From California Hospital Following Five-Day Stay

Former President Bill Clinton was released from the hospital Sunday morning following a nearly week-long stay to treat an infection, according to officials.

Clinton, 75, was hospitalized at UC Irvine Medical Center in Southern California on Tuesday. The former president was undergoing treatment for a urological infection that spread, apparently into the bloodstream, reports POLITICO, which spoke to a Clinton aide. Officials told The New York Times, on the condition of anonymity, that Clinton developed sepsis but did not go into septic shock.

“Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.”

Clinton was released early Sunday, following five nights in the hospital.

“He is in great spirits and has been spending time with family, catching up with friends, and watching college football,” Clinton spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement Saturday.

Clinton’s hospitalization was reported earlier this week, and he reportedly spent time in the ICU — although an aide told Politico that he was not receiving ICU treatment, but rather, was simply in the ICU section of the hospital.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Clinton was visiting Southern California to speak at a reception later in the week but was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday because he felt fatigued. His wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, ended up speaking at the event in his place.

“Apparently, he was not feeling well all day Tuesday,” said CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who said he spoke to Clinton’s staff and doctors. “He was out in California for an event related to his foundation, was not feeling well, and was taken to the hospital.”

“This is an infection that is now being treated with IV antibiotics,” he added. “And what they are saying is that he is responding well to those antibiotics. He’s actually been increasingly mobile, able to get up and around, said they — he was even joking around with the hospital staff, so seems to be in good spirits.”
