Bill Maher warns that Trump indictment will lead to a ‘cycle of revenge’
During his HBO show, Bill Maher expressed his concern that indicting former President Donald Trump could lead to a “cycle of revenge.” He compared it to a Greek tragedy in which one act leads to a chain of retaliations reminiscent of The House of Atreus. “I guarantee you when Biden is out of office, Day Two, they will try to arrest him,” Maher said as he started the panel discussion.
He then asked Republican Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Tablet Magazine columnist James Kirchick for their opinions on Trump’s indictment. Sears stated that due process should be followed, and everyone should wait to see what plays out. Meanwhile, Kirchick considered the three other investigations against the former president to be more critical than this one.
The host also said that this indictment could unite Republicans and make Trump the nominee. He even joked that Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida would be begging for arrest like Trump. Earlier in the show, he had interviewed Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, who called Trump’s indictment “a circus” but believed he wouldn’t be the nominee for the 2024 election.
Maher, on the other hand, disagreed with Sununu, predicting that Trump would be the Republican nominee, but he wouldn’t win. He emphasized that he doesn’t want to live in a country in which each incoming administration goes after its predecessor.
