“Black Adam” Spinoff Starring Hawkman Said to Be in Development From Dwayne Johnson and Seven Bucks Productions

Aldis Hodge made his DC cinematic debut as a race-bent Hawkman in Black Adam earlier this year and — though the newly minted studio arm of the titan comic publisher is in a major flux again — the actor may get the opportunity to flesh out his portrayal of the Thanagarian warrior as a report suggests Seven Bucks Productions wants to delve deeper.

Deadline spoke to a film producer and financier named Joe Singer about the chances of Black Adam making a profit and they had some things to say as well about it begetting a sequel or a spinoff. They state that Black Adam 2 is being discussed right now in addition to a Hawkman solo movie.

First, Singer dispelled the notion that the film is a failure. It only seems that way, he said, because it “may be considered disappointing since it had Dwayne Johnson in a DC film.” He went on to say the idea Black Adam won’t turn a profit is “false,” adding “However, the picture will pass break-even and throw off a bit of profit.”

Next, he noted setting up later installments keeps a property viable, allowing for further revenue. Deadline, making a gaffe by mixing up Hawkman and Marvel’s Hawkeye, interjected that the two follow-ups are being planned following “a B+ CinemaScore…good enough for Black Adam to be a franchise starter…with Black Adam 2 and a Hawkeye [sic] spinoff already being mapped out by Johnson’s Seven Bucks.”

Further, however, they want readers to “Note, the franchise will come to a greater realization once newly installed DC heads Peter Safran and James Gunn unveil their plans early next year.”

We are seeing the beginnings of those plans taking shape already and it seems like they are steadfastly moving away from the old DCEU which isn’t good for Black Adam or Hawkman. The film made strides in bringing the latter and the Justice Society to screens with Dr. Fate stealing the show more so than Carter Hall.

Nothing is set in stone but it’d be a shame and unfathomable if Gunn and Safran didn’t explore these characters further, especially when Gunn’s track record displays a soft spot for ones such as Hawkman and Fate.
