Black box found and victims list updated in Philadelphia plane crash

The “black box” of the medical jet that crashed in Philadelphia on Friday was found on Sunday. It was retrieved in the crater caused by the plane’s impact when it crashed into one of the city’s streets.

The “black box” is the plane cockpit’s voice recorder, which provides information about the flight, including the last words and, if any, communication from the plane’s pilots to air traffic control. The recordings will provide insight into what happened in the last minutes of the crash, possibly revealing answers to what caused the tragic accident.

The Learjet 55 aircraft crashed into the streets of Philadelphia shortly after departing from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. The plane was scheduled to arrive at Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. Six people, including the pilot, were on the flight. There were no survivors, according to reports. One other person on the street was also killed upon the plane’s impact, which brought the total to seven killed.

The black box was discovered 8 feet underground at the crash site, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The device was located after a two-day search and is in “decent shape,” reported WPVI, an ABC affiliate in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker held a press conference on Sunday to provide an update about the victims of the crash and the total number of people injured from it. In addition to the deceased, there were 22 people injured. Five are still hospitalized, and three are in critical condition, Philadelphia’s NBC 10 reported

Parker also said many of the facts circulating about the crash were not true. She wanted to give an update to help sort out fact from fiction, explaining that there was “so much misinformation about the issue on social media, and we want to make sure that those impacted benefit from the same facts that we from the City of Philadelphia have.”
