Blinken: Israel ceasefire lets Hamas ‘persist’
US Secretary of State Warns Ceasefire Could Empower Hamas
During a recent Senate hearing, Antony Blinken, the United States Secretary of State, issued a strong warning about the potential consequences of a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. He emphasized that such a ceasefire would only serve to “allow” the terrorist group to maintain its current position.
Mr. Blinken argued that a ceasefire would simply consolidate Hamas’ power and enable them to repeat their attacks in the future. He stressed that this outcome is not acceptable and cannot be tolerated.
While acknowledging the importance of providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, Mr. Blinken emphasized that Israel must be able to defend itself against rocket attacks launched by the terrorist group.

In early October, Hamas launched a violent invasion of Israel, resulting in numerous casualties and hostage situations. Mr. Blinken emphasized that no nation would tolerate such attacks and highlighted the need for humanitarian pauses to ensure assistance reaches those in need and protect innocent lives.
However, he also emphasized the need for change regarding Hamas, stating that a return to the previous status quo, with Hamas in control of Gaza’s governance and security, would only invite further violence.
“We can’t have a situation where there’s a reversion to the status quo, where when this is over, it goes back to Hamas being responsible for the governance and so-called security of Gaza because that’s simply an invitation to repeat what happened and again, no nation would tolerate that,” he said.
Post on Turkey Deleted
Shortly after the recent wave of Hamas attacks began, Mr. Blinken posted and then deleted a message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing support for a Turkey-brokered ceasefire.
“Turkish Foreign Minister @HakanFidan and I spoke further on Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel. I encouraged Türkiye’s advocacy for a cease-fire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas immediately,” he posted on Oct. 9.
During the hearing, Senator Susan Collins, the Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, expressed concerns about the potential strategic victory a ceasefire could provide for Hamas. She argued that it would allow the group to regroup and plan future attacks without facing any consequences for the devastating loss of Jewish lives.
Throughout the hearing, pro-Palestine protesters interrupted proceedings, demanding a ceasefire. Capitol Police removed the demonstrators, causing Mr. Blinken to pause his opening remarks.
The focus of the hearing was the Biden administration’s $105 billion supplemental request for Israel, Ukraine, and other purposes. The administration has requested significant funding for Israel, Ukraine, border security, and the Indo-Pacific region.
Republicans and Democrats have differing opinions on how to allocate the funds, with some wanting to separate Ukraine and Israel funding and others advocating for their combination. Ms. Collins argued that combining assistance to both Jerusalem and Kyiv would make America stronger.
How does Mr. Blinken highlight the importance of considering the long-term implications of a ceasefire agreement?
E, is not a viable option. He urged all parties involved to work towards a solution that addresses the underlying issues and prevents future conflicts.
Mr. Blinken’s warning comes at a crucial time, as efforts are underway to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The conflict has led to immense suffering and loss of life on both sides, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
While there is no denying the urgent need for a halt in hostilities and the provision of humanitarian aid, Mr. Blinken stressed the importance of considering the long-term implications of any ceasefire agreement. Allowing Hamas to maintain its current position, he argued, would only embolden the group and set the stage for further violence in the future.
The Secretary of State acknowledged Israel’s fundamental right to self-defense and the responsibility of the international community to support it. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that not only addresses the immediate crisis but also addresses the deeper issues at play.
It is clear that the current situation is unsustainable and demands concerted efforts to find a lasting solution. Mr. Blinken called on all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue and diplomacy to deescalate tensions and chart a path towards peace and stability.
While his warning may be met with skepticism by some, the reality is that allowing Hamas to continue its activities unchecked would undermine the security and stability of the entire region. The international community must not lose sight of this fact and must act decisively to prevent further violence and suffering.
As Secretary of State, Antony Blinken’s words carry weight and reflect the official stance of the United States government. His warning serves as a reminder of the complex realities and challenges involved in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Ultimately, the goal must be to achieve a just and lasting peace that ensures the security and prosperity of both Israelis and Palestinians. This can only be accomplished through a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of the conflict and provides a viable path forward for all parties involved.
As the international community continues to grapple with this ongoing crisis, Mr. Blinken’s warning serves as a call to action. The consequences of a misguided ceasefire could be dire, and all efforts must be made to prevent Hamas from being empowered at the expense of peace and security.
