Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured allies on Wednesday that President Joe Biden still intends to send more aid to Ukraine through the end of his term.
Blinken spoke to his NATO colleagues while on a last-minute trip to Brussels, Belgium. The meeting’s purpose was “to discuss support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s aggression.” Biden’s cooperation was guaranteed until President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in, according to the secretary of state.
“President Biden has committed to making sure that every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed out the door between now and Jan. 20,” Blinken said.
In the meantime, the United States plans to “adapt and adjust” the equipment that was set to ship to Ukraine. Blinken did not elaborate further. He also recommended that NATO countries ensure “Ukraine has the money, munitions and mobilized forces to fight effectively in 2025, or to be able to negotiate a peace from a position of strength.”
After Wednesday, Blinken is slated to join Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Week and the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which include stops in Lima, Peru; Manaus, Brazil; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Last month, Biden assured Ukraine another $425 million in aid, bringing the total given by the U.S. to $59 billion since Russia invaded in February 2022.
