Blumenthal says he’ll be back in DC next week after ‘successful’ leg surgery

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) will be discharged from the hospital on Monday and be back in Washington, D.C., for votes next week, his office said on Sunday.

The 77-year-old Connecticut lawmaker broke his knee over the weekend during the UConn Huskies victory rally in Hartford, Connecticut, when a person in the march tripped and fell on top of him from behind. Earlier Monday, the Huskies won the Men’s’s NCAA Basketball National Championship.

In order to” repair the crack in the upper knee and a couple of bolts were inserted to ensure that it heals fully ,” Blumenthal underwent surgery on Sunday at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut. She continued by saying that the procedure was” perfectly successful.”

Blumenthal tweeted that he has already begun physical rehabilitation and seemed to be in great spirits after the procedure.

Although Quinnipiac, you’d’d better believe I’ll’ll still be the loudest one at your celebration!” I’ve’ve already started physical therapy, but I won’t be marching in any parades for a couple of weeks!” And I’m’m pleased to report that I intend to return to Washington, D.C., for voting next week ,” Blumenthal wrote.

After two years as Connecticut’s’s lawyer general, Blumenthal is currently serving his second term in the Senate. Up until April 17, the Senate is in respite.

Democrats currently hold a 51-49 majority in the chamber, giving Republicans the chance to thwart President Joe Biden’s’s nominations and legislative initiatives with the absence of one lawmaker. Democrats’ power to drive certain objectives through the room has been hampered by the absences of members from both events in recent months, which highlights how precarious their majority is.

Sen. John Fetterman( D – PA ) will resume his work when the current break is over, which comes after a six-week hospital stay for in-patient depression treatment that kept him away from the chamber. Since March, Sen. Dianne Feinstein( D-CA) has been absent due to medical issues, and her team has not yet announced whether she will resume her duties when the Senate reconvenes the following week.
