Senator Bob Menendez and Wife Face Obstruction of Justice Charges in New Indictment
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and his wife have been hit with obstruction of justice charges in a new, 18-count indictment that was unsealed on Tuesday. These charges add to the corruption allegations that the New Jersey Democrat is already facing.
Menendez has pleaded not guilty to previous charges of accepting large sums of money from businessmen in exchange for impeding law enforcement investigations and acting as an illegal agent for the Egyptian government.
In the latest indictment, federal prosecutors in Manhattan revealed that Menendez‘s former lawyers had informed them in meetings last year that he was unaware until 2022 of mortgage and car payments made by two businessmen on behalf of his wife. “In truth and in fact, and as Menendez well knew, Menendez had learned of both the mortgage company payment and the car payments prior to 2022, and they were not loans, but bribe payments,” prosecutors wrote.
Menendez‘s current lawyers at law firm Paul Hastings have not yet responded to requests for comment. They took over from the Winston & Strawn legal team in November last year.
Nadine Menendez‘s lawyers have also not responded to a request for comment. She has pleaded not guilty as well.
The businessman responsible for the alleged car payment, Jose Uribe, pleaded guilty last week to fraud and bribery charges.
When charging the senator in September, prosecutors revealed that they had discovered gold bars and envelopes filled with cash inside Menendez‘s apartment.
They also stated that businessman Wael Hana had arranged meetings between Menendez and Egyptian officials, who pressured the senator to approve military aid. In return, Hana placed Menendez‘s wife on the payroll of a company he controlled. Hana has pleaded not guilty.
In January, prosecutors filed a more extensive indictment against Menendez, accusing him of assisting a New Jersey businessman in seeking investment from a Qatari company with ties to the Middle Eastern country’s government.
Menendez has refused to resign, despite calls from fellow Democrats. He temporarily stepped down as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after being charged in September.
