The “007 Phone” and the Bribery Scheme
In a recent court filing, prosecutors revealed that Sen. Bob Menendez’s wife, Nadine, was involved in the bribery scheme and used a phone referred to as her “007 phone.” This nickname, reminiscent of the iconic James Bond character, adds a touch of intrigue to the case.
According to CNN, Menendez made a call to his wife in January 2019 using this special phone. The prosecutors highlight this detail to emphasize the couple’s involvement in the alleged corruption.
A Diamond Ring and Concerns
Prosecutors also claim that businessman Wael Hana, a co-defendant in the case, purchased a diamond engagement ring for Nadine Menendez as part of the bribes. The total amount of the bribes reached $150,000.
An Egyptian source expressed concern that Hana might have kept some of the money for himself, potentially damaging the senator’s relationship. This complaint further strengthens the prosecutors’ argument that Menendez was involved in a corrupt relationship for the benefit of Egypt.
Hana’s attorney stated that they would soon respond to these allegations.
Secret Recordings and Not Guilty Pleas
The case against Senator Menendez has intensified recently. He faces charges of accepting bribes and using his influence to benefit businessmen, as well as the Egyptian and Qatari governments. Last week, prosecutors revealed the existence of secret recordings of the senator’s conversations with Egyptian businessmen.
All the defendants, including Menendez, have pleaded not guilty.
