Nashville police have released body cam footage of officers responding to The Covenant School shooting, including the search of the school and the final confrontation with the shooter.
The newly released six-minute video came from Officer Rex Engelbert’s body cam, who was one of the first officers to arrive at the school. The video starts after two minutes of footage were released earlier which showed the shooter driving up to the school before shooting out the glass front doors and entering the building.
The first part of the video shows a woman telling the police that all the children were locked down, but there were two students that they could not find. She directs the officers to Fellowship hall where gunshots were heard, and the police begin searching the school room by room, eventually, making their way to the second floor.
The footage shows the graphic encounter between Officer Engelbert and the shooter, Audrey Elizabeth Hale, who was found in a lobby area on the second floor
In a press conference, Police Chief John Drake revealed that Hale had drawn out a detailed map of the school, including all potential entry points, and had conducted previous surveillance of the building. He also revealed that Hale was transgender, having previously been identified as a woman in early reports before using male pronouns on a social media profile.
The six fatalities included three faculty members and three nine-year-old students. Those who died were Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61, Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney.
