Chinese migrants, in particular, have seen a significant increase, becoming the fastest growing group of migrants crossing the border. Border authorities have already encountered about 20,000 Chinese migrants since October, averaging around 150 per day.
Border crossings have continued to spike in recent months. In December, authorities encountered a record-breaking 302,000 migrants at the border, the highest monthly total ever recorded. Throughout last year, a total of 2.5 million migrants were apprehended or attempted to cross the southern border, according to the CBP.
Meanwhile, more than 96,000 “known gotaways,” migrants who were detected but not caught, have reportedly crossed the southern border since October 1.

Furthermore, Texas has sent at least 100,000 migrants to sanctuary cities such as New York City, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. These cities are struggling to provide resources for the influx of migrants.
New York City, for instance, is grappling with the arrival of nearly 175,000 migrants since spring 2022. Just last week, a group of migrants was arrested for allegedly assaulting NYPD officers near Times Square but was quickly released.
Denver is currently facing the challenge of relocating 800 families from overcrowded shelters this week.
Border Deal Crumbles, Impeachment Attempts Fail
A bipartisan border deal collapsed in the Senate, losing Republican support and drawing criticism from former President Donald Trump. The $118 billion deal aimed to tighten asylum requirements, close the southern border under certain conditions, and allocate funds to the border, Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
Trump denounced the “ridiculous” border bill as a trap for Republicans to shoulder the blame for the border crisis caused by the Radical Left Democrats, just in time for a crucial election.
House Republicans also attempted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the border crisis, but the effort failed. However, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) vowed that Republicans will persist in their attempts to impeach Mayorkas despite this setback.
What are the main arguments from critics and proponents of the current immigration policies in relation to the ongoing border crisis
Er, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.
The ongoing border crisis has raised concerns about national security and the ability of authorities to handle the influx of migrants. The Biden administration has faced criticism for its handling of the situation, with critics arguing that it has failed to implement effective immigration policies. The surge in border crossings has put a strain on Border Patrol agents and facilities, leading to overcrowding and challenging conditions for both migrants and authorities.
The increase in Chinese migrants is a notable development in the border crisis. While the majority of migrants crossing the border are from Central American countries, the number of Chinese migrants has been steadily rising. According to CBP sources, more than 37,000 Chinese migrants were encountered in the entire fiscal year of 2023, while this year’s number has already surpassed 19,600 since October. This represents a significant increase and highlights the changing demographics of migrants attempting to enter the United States.
The reasons behind the increase in Chinese migrants crossing the border are multifaceted. Economic factors, political instability, and restrictions imposed by the Chinese government are some of the factors driving migration from China. Migrants from China often seek economic opportunities and a better quality of life in the United States. The rise in Chinese migrants presents unique challenges for border authorities, as they may face language barriers and different cultural needs compared to migrants from Central American countries.
The border crisis has sparked a heated debate about immigration policies and border security. Critics argue that the current administration’s relaxed approach to immigration has incentivized migrants to attempt the dangerous journey to the United States. They argue that stricter border controls and enforcement measures are necessary to deter illegal immigration. Proponents of more lenient immigration policies argue that the United States should provide a safe haven for those seeking asylum and economic opportunities.
Addressing the border crisis requires a comprehensive approach that takes into account the complex factors driving migration. A focus on addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, violence, and political instability in countries of origin, is crucial. Additionally, improving the capacity and resources of border authorities is necessary to effectively manage the influx of migrants.
As the border crisis continues to unfold, it is imperative that the United States finds a balance between maintaining border security and upholding humanitarian values. The Biden administration must work towards implementing effective immigration policies that address the challenges posed by illegal migration while also providing a fair and efficient process for those seeking legitimate asylum or economic opportunities. Only through a comprehensive and collaborative approach can the United States effectively manage the border crisis and address the complexities of migration.
