Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) posted a long thread on X bashing police violence and white supremacy while saying some “white people” are “too far gone.”
Bowman lost in the 2024 Democratic primary to Rep.-elect George Latimer largely because of his progressive views as a member of the “Squad.”
“Dear White People, I don’t know why I feel the need to keep talking to you,” Bowman said in a post on X on Tuesday. “I don’t know why part of me still has hope for you and for us. Some of you are too far gone. But maybe enough of you aren’t and will join us in fighting to end white supremacy.”
Before listing several cases that involved police violence on black people, Bowman added, “I just wanna call out the hypocrisy and evil of it all and just continue to hope. I won’t rely completely on you because I know what’s most important is to work with my community and other like-minded allies in the fight for justice.”
The injured or murdered people he mentioned included Rodney King, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Jordan Neely, who was killed by the recently-acquitted Daniel Penny. He then asked white people how many times “they’ve seen a white man killed in cold blood on camera on” their news feeds.
“The answer is never. You never have. And whenever you feel discomfort from your whiteness, Black people are harmed or killed. And there is never accountability or justice. This is the evil of white supremacy. It spans across geography and political parties and sickens us all.”
According to a Washington Post police shooting database, 4,618 white people have been killed by the police since 2015, while 2,469 black people have been killed in that time frame. The data, however, showed that a higher proportion of black people are killed by police than white people.
Bowman saw quick backlash from his posts on X. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) posted a meme on X along with the words, “I must say, I’m shocked, just shocked that you lost your primary. You will be missed.”
Bowman acknowledged the backlash in a subsequent post. “Seems like I hit a nerve,” he said. “White people on X going crazy on this one. Must’ve been a lot of truth in what I posted.”
Latimer will be sworn into Congress on Jan. 3 after beating Bowman 58.6% to 41.4% and winning the general election.
Bowman will be leaving Congress alongside fellow “Squad” member Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), who lost in her Democratic primary to Rep.-elect Wesley Bell.
