Helenius replaces Whyte, fights Joshua in boxing match.
LONDON (Reuters) – Finnish heavyweight Robert Helenius to face Anthony Joshua after Dillian Whyte’s withdrawal
Promoters Matchroom announced on Tuesday that 39-year-old ‘Nordic Nightmare’, Robert Helenius, will step in to fight former world champion Anthony Joshua in London on Saturday. This comes after Dillian Whyte was ruled out due to a failed drug test.
Helenius, who recently defeated Mika Mielonen in three rounds, faced American former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder in New York last October and suffered a first-round knockout loss.
Anthony Joshua expressed his surprise at the change in opponent, stating, ”This wasn’t in the script.” However, he remains focused on securing a victory and sees this fight as a stepping stone towards bigger and better things.
Dillian Whyte was removed from the bout after testing positive for banned substances as part of a random anti-doping protocol.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Marchroom Sport, praised Helenius as a formidable opponent. He said, “Yes, he lost to Deontay Wilder, but that was due to a shot that could have knocked out a horse. He’s a strong puncher, standing at 6ft 8in, and he just won his last fight.”
Hearn acknowledged that this fight poses a challenge for Joshua, stating, “Ultimately, there will always be criticism, but I actually think this is a tricky and dangerous fight.”
