Boys School Coalition to Train with Transgender Activist Group
An international group representing K-12 boys schools is set to host an engaging training on “gender inclusive schools” in collaboration with a transgender activist organization. This exciting event, organized by the International Boys School Coalition (IBSC), will provide valuable lessons for faculty from its nearly 300 member schools on September 19 and 20.
The IBSC, a nonprofit that includes prestigious private K-12 schools such as Nashville’s Montgomery Bell Academy, Connecticut’s Fairfield Country Day School, and New York’s Buckley School, aims to empower educators with the knowledge and skills to create inclusive environments.
The “Foundations of Gender-Inclusive Schools” course, hosted in conjunction with Gender Spectrum, will explore various approaches for applying an understanding of gender diversity to professional practice in boys’ schools. Attendees will gain an overview of gender-literacy concepts, learn key terminology and concepts related to gender, and explore strategies for responding to resistance.
One of the highlights of the training is an overview of the “Gender Inclusive Schools” framework, which challenges binary notions of gender and encourages the use of language that promotes inclusivity. This framework is a valuable resource for school officials seeking to create a more inclusive learning environment.
Leading the training sessions is Carla Pena, the director of training at Gender Spectrum. Pena, a queer, nonbinary writer, educator, and activist, has dedicated her work to LGBTQ+ rights, inclusive education, youth work, and community organizing.
Gender Spectrum, known for its commitment to supporting transgender individuals, has partnered with surgical clinics that provide medical interventions for minors. The organization has hosted online discussions with these clinics, covering topics such as top surgery and facial surgery.
It is worth noting that the Gender Confirmation Center, a San Francisco-based surgical clinic, has sponsored conferences held by Gender Spectrum. This clinic offers a range of gender-affirming surgeries for adolescents, including top surgery, bottom surgery, body contouring, and gender-confirming facial surgery.
Gender Spectrum also promotes a book titled “The Transgender Child,” written by the organization’s founder and board chair. This book has been praised as a trusted source of information for families seeking to understand and affirm their transgender, gender-expansive, or nonbinary child.
The IBSC is not the only organization collaborating with Gender Spectrum. The National Association of Independent Schools, a nonprofit with a membership of over 1,600 K-12 schools in the United States, has also hosted a conference in partnership with this transgender activist organization.
