Boys Spend Weekend Planting Flowers at Memorial of Young Officer Killed in the Line of Duty
The family of two young boys who came across the memorial to the police officer was so touched that the boys decided to dedicate their time planting flowers at this site in his honor.
Zachary Chancer, 38, and his wife Kristina, 37, live in Cherokee County, Georgia, with their 14-year-old daughter, Olivia, and sons Bronson, 8, and Ezra, 5. In February, the family was out walking in JB Owens Park, Holly Springs, when Ezra came across a tree planted in a flower bed without flowers.
“He saw the plaque, and he asked me to come over and tell him what it meant,” Zachary shared his thoughts with The Epoch Times. “I told him that it was for a fallen officer and read the plaque to him. At the time, we had no idea … what situation happened, but that didn’t matter to Ezra. He let his imagination run wild.”
This memorial was dedicated to Joseph William Burson, an officer who died in a traffic stop on June 20, 21 at 24. He served Cherokee County.
The plaque was always visible to the children every time they visited the park. One day they asked their father why there were no flowers at the site, and the family decided to buy some fresh flowers and a vase. The family came up with something better after brainstorming together. “Ultimately we chose wild daffodils,” Zachary stated.
Zachary believes wild daffodils are a symbol of hope, folly and unrequited affection. They are perennial and can be used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. This is a cause that the Zachary family holds dear.
On Sunday, Feb. 19, in the early afternoon, the Chancers took a walk through the woods to collect native wild daffodil bulbs. Together they collected about 100 bulbs and then took them to the Memorial with the mulch left over from Zachary’s landscaping project.
The family of five took the initiative with Ezra, Bronson and Bronson. They then divided the work of digging the holes and handing the bulbs over to Bronson. Zachary snapped a picture of the proud brothers after their bulbs were planted and posted it to Facebook. page.
Family was overwhelmed by the generosity.
“Honestly, we were overwhelmed,” Zachary shared his thoughts with The Epoch Times. “We didn’t do it for the recognition; we saw a need … [this officer] laid down his life to protect and serve the community, and we wanted to give them something.”
“By putting the flowers there–a
