Bragg Sues Jordan Over Alleged ‘Campaign to Intimidate’
Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has been accused by Manhattan’s district attorney of initiating a campaign to intimidate. The claim comes in response to a New York grand jury’s recent indictment of former President Donald Trump, which District Attorney Alvin Bragg was in favour of. Jordan has demanded confidential documents and employee testimony from Bragg, going so far as to call Bragg’s decision wrong in public, as well as having subpoenaed one of Bragg’s top former deputies.
Bragg has described Jordan’s actions as “a transparent campaign to intimidate and attack District Attorney Bragg.” Bragg, a Democrat, has lodged his complaint in a New York federal court, alleging that Congress does not have the power to supervise state criminal prosecutions, nor should it impinge on state sovereignty as Jordan’s actions currently do. Furthermore, Bragg argues that Jordan does not have a legitimate legislative purpose for issuing subpoenas as he has no power under the Constitution to oversee local and state criminal matters.
After the suit was lodged by Bragg, Jordan responded by stating, “First, they indict a president for no crime. Then, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.” The congressman has been arguing that the prosecution of former President Trump has implications for federal interests, and that politically motivated prosecutions of presidents by state and local prosecutors could hinder the future exercise of the president’s powers.
