Below is an extract of the CDCWarm freshwater is vital for the survival of the amoeba, which can be found in lakes, rivers or hot springs around the world.

Officials said that primary amebic meningoencephalitis could be caused by amoeba in water.

A spokesperson stated that Naegleria fowleri can also be caused by contaminated water. Only use distilled water for anyone who uses tap water to flush, irrigate or rinse their sinuses.

The CDC reported 29 cases in the United States over the last decade. Each year, up to five cases are reported. Most cases are found in southern-tier states during the summer.

This is however the first reported case in the winter months in the United States.
