Breaking: House Fails to Elect Speaker as 20 Republicans Vote Against Jim Jordan
Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio fell short in his bid for the speakership on Tuesday, facing opposition from 20 members of his own party.
After the historic removal of Kevin McCarthy as speaker, Jordan emerged as the leading candidate to replace him.
However, Jordan needed 217 Republican votes to secure the position.
He was nominated by Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who called on the GOP conference to elect him as a strong leader against the Biden administration.

In the first round of voting, Jordan faced opposition from House Republican members who voted against his speakership bid.
Some members voted for McCarthy, while others supported Rep. Mike Garcia of California and former House Republican Lee Zeldin.
Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana also received a significant number of votes.
Jordan could only afford to lose four members of his own party, but the number of those opposing him quickly surpassed that threshold.

Although Democrats voted for Hakeem Jeffries of New York as speaker, they did not have enough votes to secure the position.
This initial vote for Jordan mirrors McCarthy’s previous bid for the speakership, which took 15 rounds of voting before a compromise was reached.
McCarthy made history as the first House speaker to be removed from his position by a motion to vacate in the middle of his term.
