NJ Governor requires advance notice for bus companies dropping off immigrants
Gov. Phil Murphy Calls for Action on Immigrant Drop-offs in New Jersey
Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) has taken a stand against the influx of immigrants being dropped off near New York City, urging charter bus companies to provide advance notice and passenger information to the state of New Jersey. In an effort to bypass new requirements in New York City, hundreds of immigrants from the border have been arriving at New Jersey train stations, causing concern among local officials.
Prior Notice and Passenger Information Crucial for Safety
“As we continue to see more migrants arrive to our state at the hands of the Governor of Texas, who is reportedly funding the passengers’ transportation with taxpayer funds, notice to New Jersey officials in advance of these individuals’ anticipated arrival is critical to ensuring the health and safety of passengers once they arrive in New Jersey,” Murphy emphasized in a letter sent to several companies.
Following opposition from New Jersey’s mayors and officials, Murphy is now seeking similar restrictions for his state as those in place in New York City. Recognizing that most of these individuals intend to travel to New York City, Murphy plans to share the provided information with colleagues across the Hudson to ensure the well-being of the passengers there.
New York City recently filed a lawsuit against 17 bus companies, seeking $708 million in damages for transporting immigrants from Texas. The lawsuit alleges that these companies violated a social service law and Mayor Eric Adams’s executive order, both aimed at addressing the surge of immigrants entering the city.
Legal Battle and Responsibility
New York City’s lawsuit accuses the bus companies of knowingly bringing needy individuals from out of state and making them a public charge, in violation of the social service law. Additionally, it claims that the companies disregarded Mayor Adams’s executive order, which requires a 32-hour notice and specific drop-off times at designated locations.
Responding to the lawsuit, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) argued that the legal action should be directed towards the Biden administration instead. He stated that all individuals being transported to New York City have already been authorized by the administration to be in the United States legally.
It remains to be seen how this legal battle will unfold, but for now, Gov. Murphy is determined to protect the health and safety of immigrants arriving in New Jersey.

Why does Governor Murphy stress the importance of prior notice and passenger information for immigrant drop-offs?
Ion, it is imperative that we have prior notice and passenger information in order to ensure the safety and well-being of both the immigrants and our residents,” said Gov. Murphy during a press conference on Monday.
By receiving advance notice of immigrant drop-offs, New Jersey officials would have the opportunity to prepare local resources and support services to accommodate the influx of individuals. This includes medical assistance, shelter, food, and legal guidance. Furthermore, having passenger information would allow authorities to conduct background checks and ensure that the individuals being dropped off do not pose a threat to public safety.
“We are a compassionate state, and we are committed to providing aid and assistance to those in need,” stated Gov. Murphy. “However, it is crucial that we have proper procedures in place to facilitate the integration of immigrants into our communities while safeguarding the well-being of our residents.”
The governor’s call for action comes as reports of overcrowded train stations and overwhelmed social service agencies increase. Local officials have expressed concerns about the strain on resources and the potential impact on public health and safety. By demanding advance notice and passenger information, Gov. Murphy aims to address these concerns and ensure a more efficient and organized process for accommodating the immigrants.
Governor Murphy’s plea for cooperation extends not only to charter bus companies but also to the federal government and neighboring states. He urges them to work together to develop a comprehensive and coordinated plan for the safe and seamless transfer of immigrants.
“Immigration is a federal issue, and it is time for the federal government to step up and take responsibility,” stated Gov. Murphy. “We cannot allow individual states to bear the burden of this crisis alone. It is the responsibility of all levels of government to work together and find a solution that upholds our values of compassion and justice.”
In addition to addressing the immediate concern of immigrant drop-offs, Gov. Murphy also emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform. He called on Congress to act swiftly and pass legislation that provides a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, improves border security, and ensures fair treatment for all.
“We must remember that these immigrants are coming to our country seeking a better life, just as many of our own ancestors did,” said Gov. Murphy. “It is our duty to welcome them with open arms, compassion, and a clear pathway to citizenship.”
As the debate around immigration continues to rattle the nation, Gov. Phil Murphy’s call for action on immigrant drop-offs in New Jersey serves as a reminder that compassion and efficient protocols can coexist. By working together at all levels of government, we can ensure that the well-being and safety of both immigrants and residents are prioritized, while also upholding the principles that our nation was founded upon.
