Former Employee of Controversial Anti-Israel Group Alleges Sexual Harassment

Lori Saroya, who worked for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Minnesota, recently filed a defamation lawsuit against the organization. Saroya, who currently serves on the city council in Blaine, Minn., filed the lawsuit in response to a press release issued by CAIR in January 2022. The press release accused her of “cyberstalking.” In retaliation, CAIR had previously filed a lawsuit against her in 2021.
“After enduring years of obsessive and destructive cyberstalking, we decided to file a defamation lawsuit against Lori in 2021 to expose the truth and protect our team in a court of law, where the truth matters,” stated CAIR’s board of directors in a lengthy message.
The Post reports that CAIR eventually dropped the lawsuit almost two years ago. However, Saroya claims that the press release from CAIR negatively impacted her job interviews, resulting in no job offers.
“CAIR’s defamatory statements about me were intended to intimidate not just me but others like me. The purpose of this lawsuit is to hold CAIR and its leadership accountable, something that has been long overdue,” Saroya told the outlet. She added that she couldn’t comment further due to the ongoing legal case.
Saroya also highlighted that the organization has a troubling history of tolerating and indulging in serious allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination within its ranks. She accused CAIR of retaliating against women who raise these issues and engaging in dishonest conduct towards the public, the Muslim-American community, and even its own board.

Saroya’s lawsuit comes after CAIR executive director Nihad Awad made controversial remarks expressing support for Gazans breaking the siege. Awad’s comments led to the White House disavowing the organization and removing its name from a fact sheet on combating anti-Semitism.
