San Francisco high school students staged a walkout over their district’s handling of sexual assault complaints.
Friday morning, hundreds of San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) students held a rally at their city hall in protest of the district’s response to sexual assault in schools. The students alleged school officials don’t take the complaints seriously and instead sweep them under the rug.
The students are demanding protection even when abuse occurs off campus, in addition to more trauma-informed protocols for people who report abuse.

Last month, similar walkouts in Oakland and San Francisco took place, suggesting school districts haven’t yet solved this problem.
A senior at Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of Arts, Daniela S. Oropeza, said she’s had countless meetings with her school’s administration for years. “And it’s just insane how they say they hear us, but they don’t protect us. They don’t do anything to change the environment so we feel safe.”
Meanwhile, the SFUSD superintendent sent a letter to parents assuring them they’re working on sexual harassment prevention within schools.
