CA Attorney General probes Chino School District for gender parental notification policy.
California Attorney General Investigates School District Over Gender Transition Policy
California’s attorney general is currently conducting a civil rights investigation into the Chino Valley Unified School District, located just east of Los Angeles. The investigation is in response to a new policy implemented by the district, which requires schools to inform parents about student gender transitions.
In a press release, State Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. He stated, “Students should never fear going to school for simply being who they are. The district’s forced outing policy threatens the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ students vulnerable to harassment and potential abuse from peers and unaccepting family members.”
Bonta previously sent a letter urging the school district not to adopt the policy, but it was implemented regardless. The policy mandates that teachers notify parents within three days if their children begin using names and pronouns that do not match their birth certificates. It also requires notification if a student requests to use a different bathroom or join a sports team of the opposite gender.
The Chino Valley school board president, Sonja Shaw, expressed her opposition to the investigation, claiming that state officials are overstepping their boundaries. She stated, “This is a ploy to try to scare all the other boards across California from adopting the policy. I won’t back down and will stand in the gap to protect our kids from big government bullies.”
During the meeting where the policy was adopted, tensions ran high. California’s superintendent of public instruction, Tony Thurmond, attended the meeting to argue against the policy. However, his speaking time was cut short, and he was escorted out by security. Shaw, the school board president, accused Thurmond of proposing things that “pervert children.”
The community members who attended the meeting were divided on the issue, with some expressing support for the policy and others vehemently opposing it. Signs and shirts with slogans such as “Queer Nation” and “Leave Our Kids Alone” were visible throughout the room.
The investigation into the Chino Valley Unified School District is ongoing, and the district has not been officially notified about it. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this policy and the subsequent investigation will impact the district and its students.
