California bar shooting: Suspected former officer – what we know
Retired Ventura Police Sergeant Opens Fire in Southern California Biker Bar
A retired Ventura police sergeant shocked the community on Wednesday night when he opened fire in a popular Southern California biker bar, resulting in the deaths of at least three people and injuring six others. The tragic incident took place at Cook’s Corner in Trabuco Canyon, a historic restaurant and bar known for its biker clientele.
Gunman Identified as Former Sergeant John Snowling
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has identified the gunman as 59-year-old John Snowling, a retired sergeant from the Ventura Police Department. Snowling, who had served in the department for nearly three decades before retiring in 2014, was one of the individuals killed by responding officers.
“Our hearts weigh heavy with the distressing incident at Cook’s Corner,” expressed Chief Darin Schindler of the Ventura Police Department in a press statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims, the survivors, and the Orange County deputies who swiftly responded to the scene. This incident deeply affects us all.”
Targeting His Estranged Wife
According to multiple law enforcement sources, Snowling was reportedly targeting his estranged wife, Marie Snowling, at the bar. Although Marie survived the attack, she sustained gunshot wounds and is currently hospitalized. The wounded victims have also been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Marie Snowling had filed for divorce in December 2022, and a hearing was scheduled for later this year, as revealed by Ventura County Superior Court records.
Neighbors Describe the Suspect
Neighbors of the Snowlings described John Snowling as a “standoffish kind of person” and not particularly personable. James Goldsmith, who lived two doors down from the suspect, stated, “Not that I can say that there was anything really negative.” He also mentioned that Marie Snowling had moved out to live with her sick mother.
The investigation into the incident is currently being led by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance and cooperation from the Ventura Police Department.
