CA Democrat seeks criminal probe into DeSantis’ immigrant flights.
A Democratic Lawmaker Calls for Criminal Investigation into Governor DeSantis
A Democratic California lawmaker has echoed calls to launch a criminal investigation into Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) after the governor flew dozens of immigrants to Sacramento earlier this year.
State Assemblymember Evan Low, representing Silicon Valley, proposed a resolution on Tuesday calling for a federal investigation and “accountability” for DeSantis’s use of the state’s program to fly immigrants to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions “under false pretenses.”
“All morally conscious Americans should be concerned that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his agents – using Florida tax dollars – illegally trafficked vulnerable migrants across state lines,” Low said in a press statement introducing the resolution.
Low’s Assembly concurrent resolution 113 states that the “Legislature urges the United States Department of Justice to investigate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for Florida’s Unauthorized Alien Transport Program; and be it further.”
“To lie and deceive human beings just trying to survive and support their families in order to transport them unknowingly to California for the purpose of scoring cheap political points is unconscionable, and these inhumane and illegal actions should be swiftly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Low said.
DeSantis has used the program to transport dozens of immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and California, which prompted state leaders to urge multiple federal investigations into the effort. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) called for an investigation in June after 36 Venezuelan and Colombian immigrants were dropped off in Sacramento from two planes, calling the Florida governor a “small, pathetic man” on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Months later, the Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois called on the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into last year’s transportation of 49 immigrants sent to Martha’s Vineyard.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta in June requested documents related to the migrant flights from Florida officials as part of the ongoing law enforcement investigation, emphasizing the importance of transparency to DeSantis’s office and the Florida Division of Emergency Management in separate letters.
DeSantis called the California investigation “absurd” in July on Fox Business, noting California is a sanctuary state and provides “benefits for illegal aliens.”
The new resolution is being referred to the appropriate committee or multiple committees in the State Assembly for further action, Low’s communications director told the Washington Examiner.
“Innocent people should not be used as pawns by immoral, power-hungry politicians like DeSantis,” Low said. “I thank the California Department of Justice, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar for their quick action to investigate.”
The Washington Examiner has reached out to DeSantis for comment.
