California DMV now allows public access to Digital Driver’s License Pilot Program.
California DMV Introduces Mobile Driver’s License Pilot Program
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has launched an exciting pilot program that allows residents to carry their driver’s license on their mobile phones. This innovative initiative, accessible through the California DMV Wallet app, is now open to the public with a cap at 1.5 million participants.
The app is available to Apple users with an iPhone 6 or newer, running iOS 13 or a more recent operating system. Android users with Android 7.0 or newer can also take advantage of this convenient feature.
By joining this voluntary pilot program, you can be among the first to experience the convenience of having your driver’s license on your phone. The DMV encourages residents to seize this opportunity.
Convenience and Accessibility
While physical driver’s licenses are still required for now, this mobile driver’s license pilot program is a significant step towards a more digital future. Airports, including Los Angeles International and San Francisco, along with over 20 others nationwide, have already embraced the mobile driver’s license as a valid form of identification.
In Sacramento, some retailers and businesses that accept TruAge identification, a digital age verification tool, are also accepting the mobile driver’s license for age-restricted products. Notably, the City National Plaza and Bank of America Plaza in downtown Los Angeles are among the locations where this digital license is recognized.
Security and Privacy
Rest assured, the mobile driver’s license does not track your usage or collect data without your consent. It provides accurate and secure proof of identity to businesses, effectively reducing fraud and identity theft risks for users.
Expanding the Program
This pilot program is currently being tested, with the goal of eventually rolling it out to all California driver’s license holders. Other states, such as Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and more, are already offering digital driver’s licenses.
