California Gov. Newsom Announces $10 Million PAC Targeting Red States
Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has announced a new political action committee (PAC) called Campaign for Democracy that will allocate $10 million of his campaign funds to turn traditionally red states blue. This national campaign will put Newsom and his plan for the country on the map as the race for the 2024 presidential campaign begins. While rumors circulate that he may run for president, Newsom has stated that he is not interested at this time and will be termed out of office after 2026.
A conflicting narrative has also emerged that the Democratic Party is experiencing lagging support for the Biden administration, according to recent polls. Despite this, top Democratic leaders remain loyal to President Biden. Meanwhile, the Campaign for Democracy will focus on questioning the Republican Party’s legitimacy and ability to serve as a democratic institution.
The committee has singled out leading figures of the Republican Party and their use of fear-mongering tactics to maintain control and foment division as an existential threat. Newsom claims that the key to the GOP’s success is fear-mongering and an authoritarian approach.
Critics, however, have expressed concern over Newsom’s use of emergency powers during the pandemic and his record number of executive orders while serving as governor of California. Other concerns include him controlling the democratically elected legislature.
