Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Stance on Reparations for Black Californians
In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed a bill authorizing the creation of a task force to study reparations for black citizens of California. As the task force prepares to send out its final report, the governor’s position on supporting the proposals remains unclear.
Newsom’s Initial Support for Reparations
When signing the bill, Newsom called it an “important step in the right direction” towards building a more inclusive and equitable future for all. He acknowledged the historical legacy of slavery and the need to address structural racism and bias in democratic and economic institutions.
Newsom emphasized California’s rich diversity as its greatest asset and expressed a commitment to rectifying the discrimination and disadvantages faced by black Californians and people of color. He saw the task force as a way to build a California that benefits everyone.
Newsom’s Continued Commitment
Newsom appointed members to the task force in May 2021, reaffirming California’s leadership in reparations and racial justice. He highlighted the importance of leveling the playing field and ensuring equal opportunities for all Californians.
Throughout the task force’s work, Newsom refrained from discussing the proposals until they were finalized. However, once the task force approved its recommendations, including potential payments of up to $1.4 million per person, Newsom commended their efforts.
Reparations Beyond Cash Payments
Newsom clarified that addressing the legacy of slavery involves more than just cash payments. He emphasized the task force’s recommendations to break down barriers to voting, combat hate, reform law enforcement and justice systems, and promote economic mobility.
Newsom stressed the need to invest in housing, education, healthcare, and other areas to eliminate disparities and improve equity. He expressed his commitment to continuing this work in partnership with the legislature.
Newsom’s Response to Criticism
After facing criticism for appearing lukewarm towards approving reparations payments, Newsom’s office clarified that his statements were sensationalized and inaccurate. They affirmed that the governor looks forward to reviewing the final report and all recommendations.
When asked about the payment plan on Fox News, Newsom reiterated that reparations encompass more than just money. He referenced Ronald Reagan’s reparations for the Japanese and emphasized the importance of acknowledging historical facts.
While understanding that the payments would be funded by individuals without a direct connection to slavery, Newsom maintained that the task force’s recommendations go beyond monetary compensation.
The Future of the Task Force’s Recommendations
The task force’s final report and recommendations will be sent to the state legislature for consideration. It remains uncertain whether the legislature will have enough votes to pass the proposals, including the controversial reparations payment plan. As a result, Newsom’s influence on the fate of these proposals may be limited.
