California school district may inform parents if child identifies as transgender.
A Controversial Proposal: Notifying Parents of Transgender Students
A California school district is currently considering a policy that would require notifying parents when their child openly identifies as transgender. The Tuesday night meeting of the Temecula Valley Unified School District board was filled with both supporters and detractors of this proposal.
Rainbow flags and clothing clashed with American flags and “Leave Our Kids Alone” shirts as passionate individuals on both sides of the issue made their voices heard.
The policy being discussed by TVUSD would make it mandatory for parents to receive a notification if their child openly identifies as a gender different from what is stated on their birth certificate or if they use school facilities that do not align with their assigned gender.
“As well-intentioned as government bureaucrats might be, they can never substitute the role of parents in the moral formation of their own children. I trust our parents,” expressed a supporter of the policy.
However, detractors of the policy raised concerns about its potential dangers.
“The No. 1 factor for having suicidal thoughts is being isolated, being alone, being unheard. You’re putting a barrier between a child who is seeking advice and seeking guidance from a teacher who actually cares about them,” warned one speaker.
They emphasized that not every home is safe and not every parent can be relied upon for support.
Similar policies have already been implemented in Chino Valley and Murrieta Valley, as reported.
