A California state senator is being sued by her former chief of staff for allegedly abusing her power to coerce him into engaging in sexual acts and then firing him after he once refused her advances.

The lawsuit accuses state Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil, elected in 2022 to represent the district encompassing the rural region northeast of the Central Valley, of “grooming plaintiff and sharing personal and intimate details” of her life, including talks about her dating life, marital infidelity, and sex life.

Chad Condit, the plaintiff, first worked as Alvarado-Gil’s campaign manager in 2022 and later became her chief of staff. Alvarado-Gil’s inappropriate behavior allegedly persisted for much of 2023 until he quit.

The lawsuit alleges that Alvarado-Gil asked Condit if he was into “throuples” and fixated on his family, namely his father, former Rep. Gary Condit.

Gary Condit made national headlines after being accused of having an affair with Washington, D.C., intern Chandra Levy, who was found dead in 2001. Alvarado-Gil allegedly referenced Chad Condit’s father, saying she assumed he would “be like his father” and “be open to a sexual relationship with her.” Gary Condit was never named a suspect in Levy’s death.

The lawsuit against Alvarado-Gil stated, “After months of creating a dominant-submissive relationship, plaintiff was numbed and acted without thinking and it went from there with Alvarado-Gil establishing her ability to dominate him.”

During a work trip, Alvarado-Gil allegedly demanded Chad Condit prove his loyalty to her “by having him go down on her.” The lawsuit said Chad Condit was coerced into performing sex acts for Alvarado-Gil on several occasions.

“During the last occasion where plaintiff performed oral sex as demanded by Alvarado-Gil, Plaintiff suffered a back injury while performing in a car seat with his body having to twist and contort in the confined space of the car,” according to the lawsuit. “Plaintiff later went to the doctor and discovered that the injury was more severe, and that plaintiff had suffered three herniated discs in his back and a collapsed hip.” He later underwent hip surgery.

Alvarado-Gil is also accused of getting closer to Chad Condit’s wife as a way of exerting power over him. This included befriending her, going to the same beauty salon as her, and hiring her to work on her 2023 campaign team.

Alvarado-Gil ran for office as a Democrat, though last month, she defected to the GOP.

The lawsuit alleges Alvarado-Gil and her deputy chief of staff went to the secretary of the state Senate “to get plaintiff fired as punishment and retaliation,” and he received a “bogus disciplinary letter with accusations of inappropriate behavior.”

The lawsuit also said Secretary of the Senate Erika Contreras “blindly accepted Alvarado-Gil’s retaliatory actions against plaintiff and ratified her abuse of him.”

Chad Condit claims that due to Alvarado-Gil’s action, his “personal and professional relationships were forever altered, and his employment record and opportunities in public employment are irreparably damaged and will never be the same.”

Ognian Gavrilov, Alvarado-Gil’s lawyer, denied Chad Condit’s allegations in a statement.

“A disgruntled former employee has fabricated an outlandish story, presented without evidence, to get a payday. We expect that the Senator will be fully cleared of any wrongdoing of these bogus, financially motivated claims,” Gavrilov said.
