California to provide healthcare for undocumented immigrants starting in 2024

Great news for undocumented immigrants in California! Starting in 2024, over hundreds of thousands of them will have access to free health care.
All undocumented immigrants, regardless of age, will be eligible for Medi-Cal, which is California’s low-income version of the federal Medicaid program.
Previously, undocumented immigrants could only receive emergency and pregnancy-related services through Medi-Cal, but now they can obtain full health insurance.
In 2015, undocumented children were allowed to enroll in Medi-Cal, and in 2019, young adults aged 19 to 25 were also granted full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
Now, the eligibility has been extended even further, allowing older adults aged 50 and above, regardless of immigration status, to receive full benefits.
According to California State Senator María Elena Durazo, this final expansion will make approximately 700,000 undocumented residents between the ages of 26 and 49 eligible for full coverage.
The office of Governor Gavin Newsom stated that they believe everyone, regardless of income or immigration status, deserves access to quality and affordable health care coverage.
“Through this expansion, we’re making sure families and communities across California are healthier, stronger, and able to get the care they need when they need it,” they continued.
The California Health and Human Services have committed significant funding to expand full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility, with $835.6 million allocated for 2023 and 2024, and $2.6 billion annually thereafter.
