All undocumented⁤ immigrants, regardless of ⁤age, will be eligible for Medi-Cal, which is California’s low-income version of the federal Medicaid program.

Previously, undocumented immigrants could only receive emergency and pregnancy-related services through‍ Medi-Cal, but now they can obtain ‍full health insurance.

In 2015, undocumented children ‍were allowed to enroll in Medi-Cal, and in 2019, young adults aged‍ 19 to‍ 25 were also granted full-scope ‌Medi-Cal eligibility, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

Now, the eligibility has been extended even further, allowing older adults aged 50 and above, regardless of⁣ immigration ⁤status, to receive full benefits.

According to ⁢California State Senator María Elena Durazo, this final expansion will make approximately 700,000 undocumented ‌residents between the ages of ‌26 and 49 eligible for full coverage.

The office ⁤of Governor Gavin Newsom stated that they believe everyone, regardless of‌ income or ⁤immigration status, deserves access to quality and affordable health care ⁢coverage.

“Through this expansion, ‍we’re making sure families and communities across California are⁤ healthier, stronger, and able to get the‌ care they need when they need it,” they continued.

The California Health and Human Services have committed significant funding to expand full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility, with $835.6 million allocated for 2023 ‍and 2024, and $2.6 ⁤billion annually thereafter.

In 2019, when California expanded health coverage to include⁢ undocumented young adults, then-President Donald Trump criticized the move,⁤ claiming it was unfair‌ to U.S. citizens.
