Pirate attacks plague California’s crime-ridden Bay Area.
Crime in California’s Bay Area: Pirates on the Rise
California’s Bay Area is no stranger to crime, but now it faces a new threat from pirates. These seafaring criminals are wreaking havoc on boaters in the Oakland Estuary, leaving a trail of stolen boats and property destruction in their wake.
Former Oakland Marina harbormaster, Brock DeLappe, expressed his concern, stating, “Over the last couple of months, it’s become extremely severe, boats are being stolen almost on a nightly basis. Residents in marinas are scared, they’re talking about forming groups, they’re arming themselves. Someone’s going to get hurt if this is not taken seriously by authorities.”
The situation is worsened by the lack of action from the local police. CBS News reported a disturbing incident where a stolen yacht was found stranded on rocks with people still aboard. Despite reporting the crime, the police failed to respond promptly, leaving the victims helpless.
Steven Young outfitted his boat, the ”Bay Escape,” to serve as a survival craft in case of a large earthquake or disaster. But that plan was sunk recently when thieves stole the 40-foot Sea Ray yacht from its slip at the Embarcadero Cove Marina. They spotted it a few days later, stuck on some nearby rocks, with people still aboard. Young called the police. “I told them somebody’s on the boat; they’re moving it as we speak,” recalled Young. “Can you just go down and impound it? The police gave us, ‘Well do you have a police report?’ I said, ‘No, we just found it. It’s grounded; there’s people on it. Can you do anything?’ They said, ‘We can’t do anything. What you need to do is get a police report.'” Young said the police never came. He said it wasn’t until days later, when the insurance company called them, that the boat was recovered. But by then it was too late.
Escalating Crime in the Bay Area
The pirate attacks are just the latest example of the rising crime rates in the Bay Area. San Francisco, the region’s largest city, is also experiencing a surge in criminal activities, leading to businesses closing or relocating.
Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, expressed concerns about safety in the city, stating that his company may host its final “Dreamforce” tech conference in San Francisco this year. Despite efforts to combat homelessness and crime, the city continues to struggle with public safety, resulting in the closure of numerous businesses.
Homicides in San Francisco have increased by nearly 40 percent from 2020 to 2022, and deaths from fentanyl have spiked. The city’s downtown area has lost half of its businesses since the start of the pandemic.
San Francisco’s crime problem has led to major retailers like Old Navy, Whole Foods, and Nordstrom closing their businesses due to safety concerns. Additionally, office vacancies in the city have reached a record-high rate, with companies like Uber and Airbnb trying to abandon their office spaces.
What are the factors contributing to the increase in pirate attacks in the Bay Area?
And I think they’re trying to steal it,” he told CBS News. “I never heard back from them.”
The increase in pirate attacks in the Bay Area can be attributed to a variety of factors. The pandemic has led to an increase in recreational boating, providing more targets for the criminals. Additionally, the economic hardships faced by many in the area may push some individuals towards criminal activities.
Local authorities must take immediate action to address this issue and ensure the safety of the Bay Area residents. Increased patrols, improved surveillance systems, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies are essential steps that need to be taken. Additionally, the community must be encouraged to report any suspicious activities and work together to protect their neighborhoods and marinas.
The residents are not standing idly by. Many are taking matters into their own hands by forming neighborhood watch groups and arming themselves for protection. However, it is crucial that the authorities step up their efforts to prevent further attacks and apprehend the criminals responsible.
Crime in California’s Bay Area has reached new heights with the emergence of pirate attacks. The local community and law enforcement agencies must work together to combat this growing problem and ensure the safety and security of the residents. Failure to take prompt and decisive action could result in severe consequences, including harm to innocent boaters and irreparable damage to the reputation of the area.
