Cameraman suffers severe fracture from powerful pitch impact.

Cameraman Hit with Brutal Fracture After Taking Powerful Pitch to the Head

A cameraman positioned near the New York Yankees’ dugout on the first-base side had a terrifying encounter during Wednesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium. Pete Stendel of YES Network was struck in the head by an errant throw from Baltimore Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson, resulting in a broken eye socket. The incident occurred in the fifth inning when Henderson attempted to complete a double play with a high throw to first base.

Stendel was immediately taken to the hospital, where he underwent tests. Thankfully, he was conscious and stable. The YES Network provided an update the following day, stating that Stendel had an orbital fracture and had been released to rest at home.

“Every time that a ball goes over the first baseman or even a foul ball from the hitter, you don’t want to see it going towards a fan. It just happened to be in the wrong spot, and I hope he’s doing all right,” Henderson said following his team’s 6-3 victory. “My prayers go out to him. I’m just thankful for the guys that rushed over there to help him.”

The game was temporarily halted for approximately 17 minutes as the Yankees’ athletic training staff and medical personnel attended to Stendel in the camera well. Both teams, including Henderson, watched with concern as Stendel received assistance. Baltimore players even left the field and waited in their dugout during the delay.

Stendel was eventually strapped onto a stretcher and driven off the field, acknowledging the supportive crowd with a raised and wagging two fingers. The 36,022 spectators applauded him as he was transported along the warning track behind home plate.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde described the incident as “awful” and expressed his hope for Stendel’s recovery.

“He gave the peace sign coming off the field, but that was tough to watch, and hopefully he’s OK,” Hyde said.

After the game, Henderson was asked if the incident had shaken him up.

“I’m doing pretty fine. Yeah, it sucks that happened to him, but it’s just trying to play the game hard. Sometimes that happens,” he replied.
