Canadian Broadcaster Calls for NHL to Fine the Philadelphia Flyers for Allowing Ivan Provorov To Abstain From Wearing Pride Night Jersey
Sid Seixeiro, a Canadian based broadcaster for Breakfast Television, took time during a segment discussing the recent reaction to Philadelphia Flyers defensemen Ivan Provorov refusal to wear a LGBTQ+ themed Pride jersey, to verbally attack the Russian Orthodox player as well as religious individuals who don’t bend the knee to the LGBTQ+ agenda.
Provorov, unlike other team members, did not wear the Pride Night warmup shirt featuring the LGBTQ+ rainbow. Provorov cited his Russian Orthodox faith as the reason he chose to abstain from supporting a lifestyle that was contrary to his faith.
“I respect everybody. I respect everybody’s choices,” Provorov. “My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion.”

John Tortorella, Flyers head coach, gave Provorov public support for his decision to not take part.
“With Provy [Provorov], he’s being true to himself and his religion,” Tortorella responded to media questions about the situation. “This has to do with his belief and his religion. It’s one thing I respect about Provy is he is always true to himself.”

During the segment on Pride Night, Seixeiro started to rant. He even went on to say that the NHL should take punitive action against the entire Philadelphia Flyers for violating the agreement. “rights” LGBTQ+ People
“John Tortorella, many years ago, when racial injustice — and it still is to this day — when Colin Kaepernick first started kneeling during national anthems, said anyone who does that on my team is going to sit. And he has a son who is an Army Ranger. So it’s not like Tortorella in the past hasn’t spoken on sensitive issues,” said Seixeiro.
“The theme from the National Hockey League is ‘Hockey is for everyone,’ okay,” He went on. “The theme is not, ‘Hockey is for everyone… unless you don’t believe in gay rights, then do whatever you want.’ If the National Hockey League’s gonna do this, if any league’s gonna do this, do it properly, or reevaluate what you’re doing, because there’s not a lot of repercussions that I’m seeing from any league.”

Seixeiro argued that Provorov should be made an example of by the NHL.
“I think you fine the Flyers a million dollars for this. I’m not kidding. Figure this out and stop offending people on nights where it’s not about that. It’s supposed to be about inclusivity. The National Hockey League need to attack this and figure this out, because what I heard last night was offensive and didn’t make any sense,” He said.

Sexeiro tried to compare LGBTQ+ Pride Nights to Military Appreciation Nights, but was unsuccessful. “I just think the NHL has to do something here. This is not good enough. This is not good enough. ‘Hockey is for everyone… unless you don’t agree with gay rights’ is not the phrasing of this. You’re either in this, or you’re not.”
He didn’t stop there though, he then turned his disdain to religious people and seemingly Christians as a whole.
“Nothing scares me more than any human being who says ‘I’m not doing this because of my religious beliefs,’ because when you’ve looked in people’s lives who normally say that publicly, you’d throw up at what you saw. You would throw up at what you saw. And I’ve seen that a million times in a lot of different ways. So don’t give me that, with respect, don’t give me that, cause no one’s perfect. Don’t feed me the religious beliefs line, and all of a sudden the NHL’s gonna back off this,” He said.
Sexeiro then reiterated his call to fine the Flyers organization, “The NHL today needs to fine that organization $1 million and reevaluate how they support gay rights because that is insulting. This is the most popular topic in Canada. It is shameful what happened in Philadelphia.
And if the NHL is serious about this — they say they are — we’ll see how serious they are today. The whole thing was mishandled. Part of me couldn’t believe it, part of me could considering how the NHL sometimes handles things,” he concluded.
