Prosecutors informed CBC News this week that police detained an LGBTQ pride leader on December 31st on charges of committing sexual offenses against minors.
A B.C. Prosecution Service (BCPS) spokesman, Dan McLaughlin, sent CBC News an email stating that Sean Gravells, the former president of the North Peace Pride Society (NPPS), is facing charges of “sexual interference with a person under 16,” physical contact with a person under 16 for sexual purposes, and possessing, importing, and distributing child pornography.
Since his arrest for the alleged offenses, Gravells has now been fired from his leadership position with NPPS, the organization said in a statement shared on Facebook.
According to CBC News, a BCPS official claimed that the former president had carried out his most recent child pornography offenses on December 31st, 2023, near Fort St. John.
“On December 31, 2023, one of our board members was arrested and is facing severe charges inconsistent with the North Peace Pride Society’s mission and code of conduct,” the NPPS wrote in the statement. “In response to the gravity of the charges, we have immediately removed this person from the board, emphasizing our commitment to our community’s values.”
According to the NPPS statement, as soon as the pride group learned of the 39-year-old suspect’s “severe charges,” “swift actions” were taken. A recently-removed profile on the NPPS website, shown below, noted that Gravells had served as board president of the organization from 2018 until his recent dismissal.
Gravells “did not have direct contact with children” while performing his job duties, the NPPS stated.
“While some board members work directly with youth through library programs, this person was not among them. All board members involved in youth programs have undergone criminal record checks,” the NPPS wrote in the statement. “Moving forward, we remain dedicated to community safety. We are implementing measures such as subjecting all board members to record checks to uphold the highest standards.”

How does the arrest of the LGBTQ pride leader on sexual offense charges impact the perception and trust within the LGBTQ community?
The Arrest of LGBTQ Pride Leader on Sexual Offense Charges
In a shocking development, it has been revealed that a prominent LGBTQ pride leader in Canada has been arrested on charges of committing sexual offenses against minors. The former president of the North Peace Pride Society (NPPS), Sean Gravells, was detained by the police on December 31st and is now facing charges of “sexual interference with a person under 16,” physical contact with a person under 16 for sexual purposes, and possessing, importing, and distributing child pornography.
The B.C. Prosecution Service (BCPS) confirmed these charges, stating that Gravells is accused of involvement in these egregious activities. The news of his arrest has sent shockwaves throughout the LGBTQ community. Many people who once looked up to Gravells as an outspoken activist and leader are now grappling with the disturbing allegations against him.
Following his arrest, Gravells has been terminated from his leadership position with NPPS. The organization issued a statement on Facebook, expressing their shock and disappointment, and emphasizing their commitment to the community’s values. They made it clear that the charges against Gravells are entirely inconsistent with the mission and code of conduct of the North Peace Pride Society.
According to CBC News, the alleged offenses involving child pornography took place on December 31st, 2023, near Fort St. John. The NPPS has taken swift action in response to these charges, removing Gravells from the board immediately and ensuring that their commitment to community values remains unwavering.
The NPPS also clarified that Gravells did not have direct contact with children during his role as board president. They assured the community that all board members involved in youth programs have undergone criminal record checks, and they are implementing stricter measures to uphold the highest standards of community safety.
This arrest serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or role in the community. The LGBTQ community, like any other, must prioritize the safety and well-being of its members, particularly the most vulnerable among them.
It is essential that organizations, in their pursuit of equality and justice, remain vigilant and take all necessary steps to prevent and address instances of misconduct and abuse. The arrest of a pride leader highlights the importance of creating safe spaces and fostering a culture of accountability within the LGBTQ community.
As this case unfolds, it is crucial that due process is followed, and justice is served for the victims involved. This incident should serve as a catalyst for necessary conversations about the safety of marginalized communities and the responsibility of individuals in positions of power.
The LGBTQ community must stand together during this difficult time, supporting the victims, and ensuring that their voices are heard. It is only through a collective commitment to safety and inclusivity that progress can be made in achieving true equality and justice for all.
