Candidates and voters unite at NorCal County GOP Convention for change.
Nearly 200 Republican Supporters Gather at Sonoma County GOP Convention
On August 26, in Santa Rosa, California, nearly 200 Republican supporters gathered at the Sonoma County GOP Convention. The event featured local candidates who spoke passionately about the issues impacting the state.
Key Talking Points
Crime, drug abuse, and education were among the key talking points at the convention. Candidates also highlighted the influence of the Chinese government, the cost of living, water rights, and energy independence as important topics for the upcoming 2024 election.
“We’re watching one of the great cities in the world, San Francisco, crash and burn, and L.A. could be next, and we’re starting to see signs of it in San Diego and certain parts of Orange County,” said Eric Early, candidate for U.S. Senate and founding partner of a law firm located in Los Angeles.
“People are afraid to go outside at night, afraid to go shopping with their families. They don’t want their kids, their families, or themselves to be caught up in a terribly dangerous situation.”
Public Safety Concerns
With retail theft increasing across the state and incidents of flash mob-style robberies causing significant losses for businesses, public safety has become a primary concern for Californians. Car break-ins and home invasions are also on the rise, leading to the departure of retailers, businesses, and jobs in major metropolitan areas.
“Crime is destroying every major city in this state, smaller cities and townships as well,” Mr. Early emphasized. “It’s a disaster, and conservatives know how to fix this. We have to prosecute criminals, and we have to set bail again.”
Impact of Proposition 47
Speakers at the convention repeatedly denounced Proposition 47, a measure passed by voters in 2014 that reduced some drug and theft crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. They argued that it has contributed to the increase in crime and illicit drug use in the state.
Fentanyl Addiction and Mental Health Crisis
Fentanyl addiction, responsible for thousands of deaths annually in California, was specifically blamed for fueling the state’s mental health and homelessness crises.
“Fentanyl is a nightmare for families all around our state and our country,” Mr. Early stated. “Punishment for crime works. What it should be is execution.”
Focus on National Security and Energy Independence
Denice Gary-Pandol, a political scientist and national security expert, also addressed the crowd at the convention. She emphasized the importance of energy independence and national security.
“National security on the border is a crisis,” Ms. Gary-Pandol said. “Terrorists have built tunnels from Mexico right into California. Drug cartels are going through those tunnels.”
Combatting Human Trafficking
Ms. Gary-Pandol expressed outrage over the ongoing debate in the California Legislature regarding child sex trafficking. She called for stricter penalties, stating that human trafficking should be a serious felony punishable by death.
Water Mismanagement and Deregulation
Water and energy were identified as fundamental issues in the upcoming election. Ms. Gary-Pandol stressed the need to deregulate industries to better serve Californians and criticized the mismanagement of water resources.
Concerns Over Dam Removal
Chris Coulombe, a candidate for the Second District congressional seat, highlighted the prevalence of dam removal as a major concern for residents in Northern California. He criticized the planned decommissioning of the Lake Pillsbury dam, which would reduce access to water for drinking and agriculture.
Impact on Firefighting and Cost of Living
Mr. Coulombe expressed concern over the negative impact of dam removal on firefighting efforts and the rising cost of living in the region.
Overall, the convention provided a platform for Republican candidates to address pressing issues and rally support for the upcoming election.
