Capitol Police arrest man for attempting to bring machete into visitor center

A man was arrested on the Capitol grounds Wednesday after he attempted to bring a machete, among other banned items, into the Capitol Visitor Center.

Police said they stopped and arrested a man after a machete was seen on the X-ray security at the north entrance of the Capitol Visitor Center. Three knives were additionally found in the man’s bag.

The man was arrested on “multiple charges of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon.” The arrest took place around 2:00 p.m.

Further details on the man’s identity are not known at this time. Former President Jimmy Carter is currently lying in state in the Capitol rotunda ahead of his funeral Thursday.
