Congressman carjacked, claims D.C. is much riskier than Texas border.
Democratic Congressman Carjacked in D.C.: A Grim Assessment of Crime
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) recently experienced the dangerous reality of Washington, D.C., firsthand. After being carjacked on Monday, Cuellar revealed that the nation’s capital is “two to three” times more perilous than his border district in south Texas.
During an interview on Fox News, Cuellar shared the details of the armed carjacking incident, where he lost his vehicle, phone, iPad, and even his sushi dinner. Fortunately, he remained unharmed, and the police were able to recover his belongings, except for the sushi.
“When I talk about the border, I always mention the immigration crisis. But in terms of murders, rape, and assaults, Washington is about two or three times more dangerous than places like Laredo, Texas. And now, we are witnessing it firsthand,” Cuellar expressed to Fox News host Jesse Watters.
Aside from discussing the crime situation, Cuellar also emphasized his support for law enforcement. When asked about attacks on law enforcement from fellow Democrats, Cuellar made it clear that he stands with the police.
“I believe many Democrats support law enforcement. However, there are some who hold a different opinion. As for me, I don’t believe in defunding the police,” Cuellar stated. “I voted against the Washington, D.C., Council’s decision to lower penalties. I think that’s the wrong direction. I was one of 30 Democrats who believe that crime cannot be reduced by lowering penalties. Instead, we should increase them.”
In a lighter note, Cuellar humorously mentioned his frustration over losing his dinner during the carjacking. He also revealed that he has a black belt in karate but decided to handle the situation calmly and let the perpetrators take the car.
“There were three individuals. I saw someone pointing a gun at me on the left, another person on the right, and a third person behind me. Although I have a black belt in karate, I quickly assessed the situation. You have to stay calm because they were young individuals. So, I decided to say, ‘Just take the car.’ Fortunately, we were able to track the car and my phone, and within an hour and a half, everything was recovered,” Cuellar shared.

What steps can be taken to improve safety measures and increase law enforcement presence in communities nationwide?
Tuation in Washington, D.C., Cuellar also highlighted the increasing violence and crime rates across the country. He emphasized that it is not just an issue at the border but a nationwide problem that needs to be addressed.
Cuellar’s carjacking incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can be faced by anyone, regardless of their political affiliation or social status. It sheds light on the urgent need for improved safety measures and increased law enforcement presence in our communities.
The fact that Cuellar, a prominent member of Congress, was targeted in the nation’s capital raises concerns about the overall security in Washington, D.C. If even someone with his position and influence is not safe, it raises questions about the safety of ordinary citizens.
Cuellar’s comparison between Washington, D.C., and his border district in Texas is particularly alarming. Laredo, Texas, is known for being a high-traffic area for drug smuggling and illegal border crossings. To suggest that Washington, D.C., is even more dangerous in terms of crimes such as murder, rape, and assault is deeply troubling.
This incident highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing crime and violence in our society. It is not enough to focus solely on border security or immigration policies. We must also invest in local law enforcement agencies, improve community relations, and address the root causes of crime.
While it is important to acknowledge the efforts of law enforcement in recovering Cuellar’s belongings, we cannot ignore the fact that his sushi dinner was not among the recovered items. This may seem like a trivial detail, but it highlights the impact that these incidents can have on a person’s life and well-being.
Cuellar’s experience serves as a wake-up call for policymakers and citizens alike. It is a reminder that crime is not a partisan issue but a problem that affects us all. We must work together to create safer communities, where individuals can go about their daily lives without fear of becoming victims of crime.
In conclusion, Cuellar’s carjacking incident and his assessment of the crime situation in Washington, D.C., should serve as a catalyst for action. We must prioritize the safety of our communities and work towards implementing effective solutions to address crime and violence. It is time for us to come together, regardless of political affiliations, and make our cities and neighborhoods safer for everyone.
