Carville says media needs to cover Trump as if the Constitution is ‘at risk’

Democratic strategist James Carville ranted about the media’s coverage of former President Donald Trump on Sunday, saying he’s “highly critical” of “fake, fair coverage” which doesn’t emphasize that “our constitutional republic is at severe risk.”

Speaking on CNN, Carville, while acknowledging he wished the Democratic Party had a “stronger position about helping the middle class,” claimed that the “existence of the Constitution and the system of government” of the United States is “at risk.”

“Here we go, we’ve got nine days to go and the existence of the Constitution and the system of government that we have had and treasured for so long in this country is at risk. Plain and simple,” he said.

Carville emphasized that “it needs to be covered that way,” even invoking historical examples like the media’s coverage of segregationist Bull Connor and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

“And I’m highly critical of 80% of the media coverage that tells me that I do not understand their jobs. I understand it clearly. Your job in Birmingham was not to cover Bull Connor and Martin Luther King equally. Your job at Pearl Harbor was not to cover [Hideki] Tojo and Franklin Roosevelt equally. And we have to understand that our existence as a constitutional republic is at severe risk here, and we have to explain it to people in plain, unambiguous, everyday language that our children are going to accept the consequences of our negligence and our fake, fair coverage that people come out with,” he said.

As the election cycle winds down, Democrats have increased the tone of their rhetoric, including numerous comparisons of a rally Trump held Sunday night at Madison Square Garden to a 1939 Nazi event.

Those claiming the comparison included Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, who claimed there is a “direct parallel” between the rally and the Nazi event.

Harris herself said she believes Trump is a “fascist” during a CNN town hall last week.
