CBS Evening News’s Norah O’Donnell announced she will soon leave her role as anchor and managing editor of the nightly news program.

In a memo shared with staff on Tuesday, O’Donnell said it was “time to do something different” and that she would transition to the role of a network correspondent after the 2024 election.

O’Donnell has spent the last five years as the CBS Evening News anchor. Before that, she co-hosted the network’s morning news show.

“I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, connected to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle. It’s time to do something different. This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events,” O’Donnell said.

CBS News & Stations and CBS Media Ventures CEO Wendy McMahon commended O’Donnell’s work and said her new role will enable her to “do more of the storytelling and big interviews that are a hallmark of CBS News, as well as Norah’s illustrious career.”

O’Donnell called her time with the CBS Evening News “amazing.”

“I love what I do,” she said. “There’s so much work to be proud of!”
