CBS Execs Told Staffers Not To Report Nashville Shooter’s Transgender Identity: Report

According to a report from the New York Post, CBS News executives told their staff members not to report that the perpetrator of the Nashville shooting, who killed three adults and three nine-year-old children at a private Christian school on Monday, was transgender. An internal memo obtained by the Post revealed that the executives cautioned against mentioning the shooter’s gender identity, which they said had not been confirmed. According to the memo, “we should avoid any mention of it as it has no known relevance to the crime”.

The internal memo was reportedly issued by Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, the vice president of newsgathering at CBS News, and Claudia Milne, the senior vice president of standards and practices, on the day after the shooting. It instructed CBS staff members to focus on other aspects of the investigation and to only describe the perpetrator as a 28-year-old who was shot and killed by the police at the scene.

Sources within CBS have criticised the directive, stating that the decision to withhold information on the shooter’s gender identity was not journalistic, and that the facts of the case should not be ignored or hidden from the public.

While CBS avoided mentioning the perpetrator’s transgender identity, NBC News acknowledged it in an article titled “Fear pervades Tennessee’s trans community amid focus on Nashville shooter’s gender identity.’

The shooter’s manifesto has not yet been released by the police, and the investigation is ongoing.
