Lucas joined Hallmark from TV One in 2020, taking over from former CEO and President Bill Abbott after the controversy surrounding the removal of a commercial featuring a same-sex couple on Hallmark Channel. One of Lucas’ main priorities during her tenure was to increase representation.
Her arrival followed a promise from Perry to collaborate with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) in order to create a more inclusive environment and promote diverse storylines. Under Lucas’ leadership, the channel introduced several LGBTQ+ supporting characters and premiered its first feature film centered on a same-sex relationship.
However, alongside the push for diversity and inclusivity, Lucas also witnessed the departure of several of the network’s biggest stars.
Candace Cameron Bure, known for her roles in holiday films and the Aurora Teagarden mystery series, announced in 2022 that she would be joining ex-CEO Bill Abbott’s new venture, Great American Family, which focuses on traditional marriage and faith-based storylines.
