Health records company CEO, a prominent Democratic donor, excludes parents from accessing their children’s records.
Judith Faulkner: A Controversial Figure in the Medical Software Industry
Judith Faulkner, the founder and CEO of Epic Systems, a leading electronic health software company, has recently come under scrutiny for her political affiliations and the potential impact they have on medical decision-making. Epic Systems has been accused of enabling doctors to bypass parental consent laws, allowing children to pursue medical pathways without their parents’ knowledge or consent.
A Major Donor to Left-Wing Candidates
A recent investigation by the Washington Examiner revealed that Faulkner has been a significant donor to left-wing candidates. This raises concerns about the alignment between her company’s practices and the political ideologies of those she supports financially. For example, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, who received $20,000 from Faulkner during his reelection bid, is known for supporting the very minor consent laws that Epic Systems utilizes to bypass parental rights.
Faulkner’s political contributions extend beyond Wisconsin. She has also donated to prominent figures like President Joe Biden, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. Additionally, she has supported Democratic parties in various states, including Wisconsin, Virginia, Minnesota, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and North Carolina.
A Concerning Influence on Medical Records
Tom Jones, the president of the American Accountability Foundation, expressed his concerns about Faulkner’s influence, stating, “Americans should be rightly concerned that a large portion of the country’s medical records are controlled by a reclusive radical liberal activist who has made it part of her life’s work to promote social policies that are out of step with average Americans.”
Epic Systems, under Faulkner’s leadership, has become the preferred records software for numerous hospital systems, serving a staggering 305 million patients. Notable institutions like Johns Hopkins, Children’s Hospital, and Cleveland Clinic rely on Epic’s software. With a 36% market share in hospitals, Epic holds an 11% advantage over its closest competitor, Oracle Cerner.
Controversy Surrounding Transgender Issues
In addition to its market dominance, Epic Systems has faced criticism for its activism on transgender issues. The company has been accused of advocating for children to pursue controversial medical pathways without parental knowledge or consent. One example cited by the Washington Examiner involves Children’s Hospital New Orleans, where Epic’s product, MyChart, allowed a 13-year-old girl named Violet to access medical care without her parents’ involvement.
Republican Representative Mike Johnson expressed his concerns, stating, ”Protecting children from irreparable bodily harm should not be a partisan issue. Sadly, Democrat politicians and their donors are threatening parental protections of our children.” Johnson is currently chairing a committee on the “dangers” of child gender transitions and believes that federal laws are necessary to safeguard families from politically motivated companies like Epic.
A Mixed Record of Political Donations
Despite the controversy surrounding Faulkner and Epic Systems, it is worth noting that Faulkner has also donated money to some Republican politicians. Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Richard Burr, as well as Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI), have received contributions from Faulkner. It is important to consider the context of these donations, as both Cassidy and Burr were members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee at the time.
Epic Systems declined to comment on the Washington Examiner’s inquiry regarding these allegations.
