Clara Bishop, a 20-year-old fairgoer, found herself in a harrowing situation. While holding a friend’s phone and bag, she urgently called for them to disembark from a ride upon hearing news of the shooting. Amid the flood of people leaving the ride, she sought refuge under another nearby attraction.

Juan Reaves, the operator of Smokey John’s Bar-B-Que, had stepped away to his vehicle when the shooting occurred. He lamented the impact on his business, with three employees quitting due to feeling unsafe at the fairgrounds.
“This is so disappointing,” Reaves expressed. “The fair is one of the best reflections of Dallas.”
Notably, the fair had implemented increased security measures just last month, including weapons detection systems and bag searches for all attendees. The fair’s weapons policy strictly prohibits firearms, knives, clubs, tasers, and other dangerous items.
While unlicensed gun owners are not permitted to bring weapons into the fair, individuals with valid handgun licenses are allowed to carry concealed firearms, except in locations prohibited by law.
Despite these precautions, the fair does not permit open carry of guns.
