Charles Lipson: How Bragg’s Prosecution Harms Our Legal System
Recently, a grand jury in New York indicted former president Donald Trump for his alleged involvement in “hush money” payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The prosecution is being led by Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg, who seems to be on a crusade to charge Trump with anything he can.
Despite having weak evidence and flimsy legal theories, Bragg is moving forward with the case by focusing on a misdemeanor that falls beyond the statute of limitations. Additionally, he aims to tie this minor charge to other alleged crimes to create a more severe felony offense.
The case is concerning for the legal system as it sets a dangerous precedent for prosecutors to go after individuals for political reasons without sound evidence or reasoning. This strategy is not only unethical but also violates our fundamental right to a fair trial.
